Arne Slot acknowledges that Alexis Mac Allister has yet to reach the levels he expects but remains confident the Liverpool midfielder “will be back” once he regains full fitness.
Alexis Mac Allister scored twice in Argentina’s 6-0 thrashing of Puerto Rico on Tuesday night, describing the performance as an “important moment” in his season.
That friendly marked only the second time the Argentina midfielder has completed 90 minutes this campaign, both coming for his country rather than his club after a buildup of injuries brought his previous season to an early end.
The 26-year-old finds himself in a situation similar to that of Alexander Isak, who also spent the summer training individually before completing his £125 million deadline-day move to Liverpool.
“One thing is clear and that’s what was in your question, unfortunately he went out immediately after we won the league and we were expecting him to be back from the start of pre-season, which he wasn’t,” Arne Slot said.
“That led to the fact he wasn’t able to play three times in a row, so he went in, out, in, out, 60 minutes, 45 minutes. That’s never an ideal scenario for a player.
“But like all the others, he’s a player that has experienced so many things in his career already that he will be back at the level he wants and the level I want from him.”
