Arne Slot surprised by Liverpool contract talk amid poor run of form

Reports have suggested that Slot’s representatives have opened negotiations with Liverpool over a new deal, but the Reds’ current form may have complicated matters

Arne Slot says that talk of a new Liverpool contract was “the last question he was expecting” after overseeing a run of six defeats in seven matches.

Reports have suggested that Slot’s representatives have opened negotiations with Liverpool over a new deal, but the Reds’ current form may have complicated matters.

The Premier League champions have lost six of their last seven games and are without a clean sheet in 10 consecutive outings across all competitions.

Supporters could be forgiven for their surprise at any discussion of a contract renewal under such circumstances, and it appears Slot shares that sentiment.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash with Aston Villa, the Dutchman was asked whether talks were ongoing over an extension to the three-year deal he signed last summer.

“That is the last question I was expecting!” Slot laughed.

“I think my focus can be completely on getting Liverpool back to winning ways. That’s my first answer.

“The second answer is that contract talks – if they are even there – we never speak about this here.

“But let us first start to win again, that’s where my main focus is.”

As expected, Slot declined to comment, consistent with his policy of avoiding discussions about contracts, transfers, or potential signings during media briefings.

For now, the Liverpool boss remains focused on improving performances and restoring confidence before any consideration of a longer stay at Anfield.

Despite their dismal run, Slot’s position is understood to be secure.

According to BBC Sport’s Phil McNulty, there is “no chance” the club will part ways with Jurgen Klopp’s successor at this stage.

Even so, pressure is mounting ahead of a critical stretch of fixtures, with upcoming games against Aston Villa, Real Madrid, and Manchester City likely to define Liverpool’s response to their current crisis.
