Arsenal finally reach full agreement to sign Sporting forward Viktor Gyokeres

The Gunners will pay an initial €63.5million (£54.8m), plus €10million in add-ons

Arsenal have finalised a full agreement with Sporting CP for the transfer of striker Viktor Gyokeres, according to The Athletic.

The Gunners will pay an initial €63.5million (£54.8m), plus €10million in add-ons.

Gyokeres has been granted permission by Sporting to travel and is expected to undergo his medical with Arsenal on Saturday.

The 27-year-old will take the iconic No.14 shirt at Arsenal, famously worn by the club’s record goalscorer Thierry Henry.

Gyokeres was determined to join Arsenal and, despite late interest from other clubs, he did not consider any alternative destinations. His agent even waived their commission to facilitate the move.

Gyokeres is set to sign a five-year contract with the Gunners.

The Swedish striker has been one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards this summer, following an impressive season in which he scored 54 goals in 52 appearances for Sporting.

Arsenal identified him as their primary target to fill the centre-forward role.

The Gunners lacked a recognised No.9 for much of the 2024-25 season due to injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

They finished second in the Premier League for the third consecutive campaign, trailing champions Liverpool by ten points and scoring 17 fewer goals.

Gyokeres’s career took off after his move from Brighton & Hove Albion to Coventry City for around £1million in 2021.

He became a key player for Coventry before transferring to Sporting for £17million in 2023.

Since then, he has recorded 97 goals and 28 assists for the Portuguese side, helping them secure consecutive league titles and the Taça de Portugal last season.

Arsenal have been active in their first summer transfer window under new sporting director Andrea Berta.

Alongside Gyokeres, midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Nørgaard have joined from Real Sociedad and Brentford, respectively, while goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and winger Noni Madueke arrived from Chelsea, and defender Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia.

Gyokeres made his Sweden senior debut at the age of 20 and has since earned 26 international caps, scoring 15 goals.
