Premier League champions Liverpool will face FA Cup winners Crystal Palace in the Community Shield at Wembley, offering both sides a chance to claim early-season silverware.
For Liverpool, it will be an emotional occasion as they play their first competitive match since the passing of Diogo Jota.
Palace, competing in their first-ever Community Shield, will look to make history.
They have recorded 15 victories over Liverpool in competitive fixtures, but only one of those has come in the last eight years – a surprise 1-0 win at Anfield in April 2024 during the early days of Oliver Glasner’s tenure.
While heavy defeats, such as the 0-7 loss at Selhurst Park in 2020, still linger in memory, recent meetings have been far tighter, with every game since the start of the 2022-23 season decided by a single goal or ending in a draw.
Liverpool, meanwhile, boast 37 wins over the Eagles and took four points from their two Premier League encounters last season, including a campaign-ending draw in May.
This will be the first-ever meeting between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Wembley, adding another layer of intrigue as both sides look to lift the 2025 Community Shield.
Arne Slot said ahead of the game: “Which is nice if you can start the season with the chance of winning something. Normally you have to play numerous games before you can win something.
“If it’s the League Cup, FA Cup, let alone [the] Premier League or Champions League, normally you win something in the end of the season.
“Now we have a chance to win something in the beginning of the season. Unfortunately, we face a very good Crystal Palace that have been very difficult to win against for us, because we played 1-1 against them in the last game of the season.
“They showed in the last final – and even in the semi-final, by the way, as well – how difficult it is to win a one-off game [against] them.
“I think most of the players that they have are still there, so even more reason to know what a difficult team it is to play against.”
