Liverpool make contact over Bundesliga star as striker search intensifies

Newcastle had made an offer worth around €75million (£64.9m) for Ekitike, which Frankfurt rejected

Liverpool have made contact with Eintracht Frankfurt regarding a possible move for Bundesliga star Hugo Ekitike, who is also a target for Newcastle United, according to The Athletic.

Newcastle had made an offer worth around €75million (£64.9m) for Ekitike, which Frankfurt rejected.

Now, Liverpool – the reigning Premier League champions – have also approached the Bundesliga club as they look to strengthen their attack with a new forward.

This development comes alongside Liverpool’s pursuit of Newcastle’s forward Alexander Isak.

The Anfield club have expressed interest in a deal worth around £120million for the 25-year-old Swedish international.

Newcastle remain persistent in their efforts to sign Ekitike this summer, marking their third attempt following unsuccessful bids in January and the summer of 2022.

The 6ft 3in forward is known for his pace, aerial ability, and versatility – attributes that could see him partner effectively with Isak.

Sensitivities remain high at Liverpool following the tragic death of Diogo Jota earlier this month, but the club recognize the need to bolster their attacking options during this transfer window.

Liverpool’s main priority in the transfer market is securing a top-class No. 9 to reinforce their forward line.

The club is open to offers for Darwin Nunez, while winger Luis Díaz has expressed a desire to leave.

Despite Liverpool’s interest, Newcastle maintain that Isak is not for sale.

Ekitike scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists across all competitions for Frankfurt last season.

He joined the Bundesliga side permanently in the summer of 2024 for €17.5 million, after a loan spell from Paris Saint-Germain the previous season.

His 15 Bundesliga goals last campaign tied him with former teammate Omar Marmoush – now at Manchester City – as the league’s joint top scorer for the 2024-25 season.
