Liverpool stand ‘no chance’ of keeping Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold's contract expires at the end of the current season

Liverpool have been warned that they face an uphill battle in retaining Trent Alexander-Arnold, as Real Madrid ramp up their interest in the England international.

The 26-year-old, now in the final year of his contract at Anfield, will be free to negotiate with overseas clubs once the January transfer window opens.

Alexander-Arnold, who played a key role in Liverpool’s narrow 1-0 win over RB Leipzig on Wednesday, could leave his boyhood club on a free transfer next summer.

If he does, Real Madrid are reportedly the frontrunners to secure his signature.

The reigning European and Spanish champions have identified Alexander-Arnold as their top target on a four-man shortlist to fill the right-back position.

Speculation around Alexander-Arnold’s future has intensified following a long-term injury to Madrid’s long-serving right-back Dani Carvajal, who is expected to be sidelined until October 2025.

Despite the transfer rumours, Liverpool manager Arne Slot remains optimistic that Alexander-Arnold will commit to a new deal, insisting the defender is fully focused on the season ahead.

However, Sky Sports pundit Tim Sherwood has cast doubt on Liverpool’s chances, suggesting that the club may need to shift their focus to negotiating new deals with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, who are also approaching the end of their contracts.

Asked whether Slot could persuade all three players to stay, Sherwood told Sky Sports: “That helps. We’re talking about three top-drawer players there who want to win trophies

“They don’t want to sit there just to challenge for Champions League positions.

‘They all want to win stuff so this start helps, it can only help.”

He added: “I think with Trent, I think he’s gone.

“Once Real Madrid come knocking for you…

“He’s won everything at the football club and been a magnificent servant but there’s no chance they’re keeping him now I wouldn’t have thought.

“With Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, I think it’s completely different because I’m not sure where they are going to go which is better than Liverpool.”

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, meanwhile, has issued a stern warning about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s potential move to Real Madrid.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher expressed his concerns, saying: “You’ve got three players – Van Dijk, Salah, and Trent – but when you’re a local player at Liverpool, leaving the club is not just a decision; it’s complicated.

“If Van Dijk or Salah left on a free transfer, Liverpool fans would likely wish them well and appreciate their contributions.

“But with Trent, it would be different. The reaction would be much more intense.”
