Liverpool have made their first move to extend Mohamed Salah’s stay at Anfield, submitting an opening contract offer to the 32-year-old, according to The Athletic.
Salah’s current deal expires at the end of the season, and Liverpool are keen to avoid losing him as a free agent.
It is aso believed that a new deal has also been tabled for Virgil van Dijk, who is in a similar contractual situation.
However, while there is optimism at Anfield about securing both players’ futures, an agreement is not yet in place, and the process remains in its early stages.
The situation is pressing, as Salah, Van Dijk, and academy graduate Trent Alexander-Arnold will be free to negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs from January 1 if no extensions are finalised by then.
Liverpool have reportedly submitted proposals to all three players, and discussions are ongoing.
It was reported earlier that Salah was waiting for clarity from Liverpool regarding the length and financial terms of a potential renewal.
Last week, it was revealed that Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold had also received contract offers.
Despite the progress, Salah expressed frustration last month after Liverpool’s victory over Southampton, stating he was “probably more out than in” and disappointed that no formal offer had been made at the time.
Salah’s performances this season underline his importance to Liverpool.
He has already scored 15 goals and provided 12 assists in all competitions, including two goals and an assist in the dramatic 3-3 draw with Newcastle United on Wednesday.
Since joining from Serie A side Roma in 2017, Salah has been instrumental in Liverpool’s success, netting 226 goals in 370 appearances and winning major honours, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.
Liverpool, under the leadership of new head coach Arne Slot, currently sit atop the Premier League table.
However, their recent progress was temporarily halted as Saturday’s Merseyside derby was postponed due to severe weather warnings in the UK.
The Reds have also been flawless in the Champions League’s league phase, winning all five of their matches so far. Salah has contributed one goal and four assists in the competition.
Next up for Liverpool is a clash against Girona on Tuesday, where Mohamed Salah and his teammates will look to maintain their momentum amid ongoing contract talks.
