Liverpool to wait until summer for Marc Guehi move

The Reds came close to landing the Crystal Palace captain on deadline day

Liverpool will not attempt to sign Marc Guehi in January, with plans instead to revisit a potential deal next summer.

The Reds came close to landing the Crystal Palace captain on deadline day, but their £35million offer plus a 10 percent sell-on clause fell through after the Eagles failed to secure a replacement.

Though Guehi had agreed to the move, chairman Steve Parish blocked the deal, with manager Oliver Glasner reportedly threatening to resign if his skipper was sold.

Despite speculation that Liverpool could return for Guehi in the winter window, the Times’ Paul Joyce has reported that the club “will not revisit their interest in Marc Guehi in January and would only now sign the Crystal Palace centre-back on a free transfer next summer.”

The Telegraph’s Chris Bascombe added that Liverpool view suggestions of rival interest from the likes of Manchester City, Juventus and Barcelona as “a bluff to bring them back to the table on January 1.”

Still, some may argue that Arne Slot’s side could use Guehi immediately, with Joe Gomez’s injury record and Giovanni Leoni’s inexperience leaving just Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate as senior regulars in defence.

Bascombe noted that Guehi was considered more of a potential replacement for Gomez than Konate, though the Frenchman is in a similar contractual position, entering the final year of his deal.

For now, Liverpool appear prepared to bide their time – even if that means waiting until next summer to reinforce their defensive ranks.
