Real Sociedad don’t fear losing Martin Zubimendi in January amid Liverpool and Man City transfer links

Sporting director Roberto Olabe has voiced confidence that Zubimendi will not leave in January

Martin Zubimendi does have a release clause in his contract, but Real Sociedad have ruled out a January departure despite growing Premier League interest.

The midfielder’s consistent performances in La Liga, coupled with his influential role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, have attracted attention from Premier League giants Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal.

In the Euro 2024 final, Zubimendi showcased his composure and technical ability when stepping in for the injured Rodri, further enhancing his reputation on the international stage.

However, Real Sociedad’s hierarchy remains determined to retain their academy graduate, whose loyalty to the club has been evident throughout his career.

Sporting director Roberto Olabe has voiced confidence that Martin Zubimendi will not leave in January.

Speaking to Estadio Deportivo, Olabe stated: “Zubimendi has a release clause, yes… but it’s always the player to decide and he’s been showing how committed he is to our project.

“So far, we’ve seen how he has behaved and I don’t predict any ‘scares’ in January for Zubimendi to leave”.

It was reported that the midfielder’s current contract includes a €60million (£50.1million) release clause.

During the summer transfer window, Liverpool identified Zubimendi as a key target, with manager Arne Slot eager to bolster his midfield by securing the player’s services.

The Merseyside club was ready to trigger the release clause, but Zubimendi ultimately chose to stay at his boyhood club.

According to reports, Zubimendi had a heartfelt conversation with Real Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil before making his decision.

Alguacil emphasised the potential impact a move abroad could have on Zubimendi’s personal life, as well as the deep connection he has with San Sebastián.

These discussions played a crucial role in his decision to reject Liverpool’s advances.
