Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has declined an offer from Liverpool, choosing to stay with his current club despite interest from the Premier League giants, according to Relevo.
Just when it seemed that Zubimendi would be leaving this summer, he has decided to remain with his hometown club – rejecting a lucrative offer from the Reds, who were prepared to trigger his €60 million release clause.
Zubimendi’s decision to stay is a huge relief for Real Sociedad, who had been bracing for the worst.
The San Sebastián native was on the verge of a move to Anfield, as reported just weeks ago.
The agreement between the player and Liverpool was said to be complete, with the Reds eagerly anticipating his arrival as a cornerstone of their future plans.
However, in a dramatic change of heart, Zubimendi has chosen to remain loyal to Real Sociedad, turning down the allure of Liverpool.
His departure would have dealt a significant blow to Real Sociedad’s ambitions.
Replacing a player of Zubimendi’s caliber would have posed a formidable challenge for manager Imanol Alguacil, who relies heavily on the midfielder’s contributions.
Alongside Mikel Merino and Brais Méndez, Zubimendi has been part of one of the most formidable midfielders in Europe.
Losing such a key figure would have disrupted the team’s balance and strategy.
But with Zubimendi now staying, Real Sociedad have secured a crucial victory in their efforts to maintain their competitive edge.
He had previously rejected the likes of Arsenal and Bayern Munich.
The 25-year-old needed to pay the €60 million release clause himself at the La Liga offices in Madrid to facilitate a transfer.
Martin Zubimendi has emerged as a prime candidate for the No. 6 role under new Liverpool head coach Arne Slot, with the Anfield club believing that he was set to join them.
When asked about the possibility of new signings following friendlies against Sevilla and Las Palmas on Sunday, Slot said: “I’m positive. I’m confident.
“I think that we should make some signings based on how long the season will go.
“I think they’re working behind the scenes.
“I’m fully convinced and trust in the club that they will do the right thing for us and get the best possible squad in order to compete in every competition that we are in.
“I have to trust and we’ll see what happens.”
