Sky Sports has provided a significant update on the ongoing contract talks between Liverpool and Mohamed Salah, and the news is concerning for Reds fans.
The Egyptian winger has been one of the standout performers in European football this season, already registering double figures for goals and assists across all competitions.
Under the guidance of Arne Slot, Liverpool have surged to the top of the Premier League, holding a five-point lead after just 11 games.
However, Salah’s contract situation has been a major talking point throughout the campaign, as his current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, making him a free agent.
Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg has now revealed that discussions are ongoing regarding an extension beyond 2025.
Despite the talks, the two parties are still “far apart” on reaching an agreement, and no deal has been finalised yet.
“Liverpool and Mohamed Salah’s management are still in talks about a potential new contract beyond 2025,” he posted on X.
“However, no agreement has been reached yet, as both parties remain far apart.
“Salah has other top options in both Saudi Arabia and Europe.”
Salah scored and provided an assist in Slot’s side’s 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at the weekend, as Liverpool continue to push for the title in the absence of Jurgen Klopp.
The Reds are also the only team with a perfect record in the Champions League group stage at the halfway point.
However, Liverpool face crucial negotiations with current captain Virgil van Dijk and star defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, both of whose contracts are set to expire in 2025.
If new deals aren’t signed before January 1, all three players will be eligible to hold talks with foreign clubs about pre-contract agreements.
This leaves Liverpool with a lot of work to do before the close of the year to secure their key players for the future.
