Mohamed Salah is on the verge of signing a new two-year contract with Liverpool, quashing speculation about his future at Anfield, according to the Mirror.
The deal, reached after months of negotiations between Fenway Sports Group (FSG) and the 32-year-old Egyptian superstar, represents a compromise on both sides.
Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas, initially pushed for a three-year extension, while Liverpool were only willing to offer a one-year deal beyond his current contract, which expires next summer.
Amid the impasse, Salah publicly hinted that this could be his final season with the club he joined in 2017.
Fans, concerned about losing one of their greatest ever players, expressed their support through banners, including one reading, “He Fires a Bow, Now Give Mo His Dough.”
Despite Mohamed Salah being Liverpool’s highest earner with a weekly wage exceeding £400,000, the length of the contract remained the main sticking point.
FSG’s reluctance to offer long-term deals to players over 30 also explains the delay in extending Virgil van Dijk’s contract, with the 33-year-old’s current deal also set to expire next summer.
However, Salah’s continued brilliance on the pitch appears to have swayed Liverpool’s owners.
The forward leads the Premier League scoring charts this season and recently broke Wayne Rooney’s record for goal contributions in games by scoring and assisting in 37 separate matches – a feat achieved during Liverpool’s midweek victory over Newcastle.
Recognizing Salah’s irreplaceable value, FSG are now prepared to offer a lucrative two-year deal. Barring any last-minute hitches, Salah will soon commit his future to the Reds.
The news is a massive boost for manager Arne Slot, who has quickly realised the importance of having Salah at the heart of his squad.
This development also delivers a blow to the Saudi Pro League, which had been keen to lure Salah to the Middle East.
Last summer, Liverpool turned down a staggering £150million bid from Al-Ittihad, and Salah’s decision to stay at Anfield shuts the door on any future offers from Saudi Arabia, even as a free agent.
By agreeing to this contract, Salah has resisted the lure of an open-ended financial fortune in the Middle East.
Instead, to the delight of Liverpool fans worldwide, he remains committed to adding more silverware to his legacy at Merseyside.
