Mohamed Salah would accept new one-year contract at Liverpool

The Egyptian forward is still awaiting clarity from Liverpool regarding the length and terms of any potential deal

Mohamed Salah is willing to sign a one-year contract extension at Liverpool but has grown increasingly frustrated with the club’s handling of negotiations, according to The Athletic.

The Egyptian forward is still awaiting clarity from Liverpool regarding the length and terms of any potential deal.

Meanwhile, top European clubs are closely monitoring the situation, with Salah’s current contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Salah is prohibited from negotiating with other clubs under the terms of his existing deal but will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with non-English clubs starting January 1.

Reports in L’Equipe recently linked Salah with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, though the Ligue 1 champions have denied any talks are taking place.

Liverpool have maintained that discussions with Salah’s representative, Ramy Abbas, have been positive and remain ongoing.

However, Mohamed Salah is dissatisfied with the slow pace of negotiations and doubts the club will meet his expectations regarding contract terms.

After Liverpool’s win against Southampton last month, Salah hinted at his discontent, saying he was “probably more out than in” and expressed disappointment over the lack of a formal offer.

Despite his frustrations, Salah remains committed to Liverpool and reiterated his love for the club in the same interview.

Salah believes his performances and status as one of the world’s best players should be reflected in any new deal.

The 32-year-old has delivered stellar performances this season, scoring 13 goals and providing 11 assists in 20 appearances across all competitions.

His latest contributions – a goal and an assist – secured Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday, extending their lead at the top of the Premier League table to nine points.

Salah’s current deal, signed in 2022, made him the highest-paid player in Liverpool’s history, with a reported base salary of £350,000 per week, supplemented by significant performance-related bonuses.

While he will turn 33 next summer, Salah is confident he can maintain his high standards and remains determined to win the Premier League and Champions League with Liverpool this season.

He also harbours ambitions of winning the Ballon d’Or, a goal he believes is still achievable despite his age.

Notably, the award has not been won by a player under the age of 31 since 2015, when Lionel Messi claimed it at 28 – similar to this year’s winner, Rodri.

Liverpool’s hesitation to initiate contract talks before this season has only added to Salah’s frustrations.

Since signing his extension in 2022, the club had not approached him about a renewal until this year, despite his openness to staying longer.

In the summer of 2023, Liverpool turned down a £150million bid from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad, signaling their intent to retain Salah.

Whether that commitment extends into securing a new deal for their talisman remains to be seen.
