Ruud van Nistelrooy told Ruben Amorim ‘won’t have his back’ at Manchester United
The Portuguese coach is set to formally take charge of United on November 11
Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham has cautioned Ruud van Nistelrooy that Ruben Amorim may not want him as part of his backroom staff.
The Portuguese coach is set to officially take charge of Man United on November 11, following last week’s announcement of his appointment as the club’s next head coach, succeeding Erik ten Hag.
In the interim, Van Nistelrooy, who was Ten Hag’s assistant, is managing the team.
Under his leadership, the Red Devils secured a 5-2 victory over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup, but they were held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday at home.
After the match against Chelsea, Ruud van Nistelrooy expressed his desire to remain at the club and work under Amorim.
However, Sheringham, a former England and United forward, believes it is unlikely that the 39-year-old will retain him in the new setup.
Speaking to Flashscore, Sheringham said: “It wouldn’t be a mistake for Ruben Amorim to part ways with Ruud van Nistelrooy.
“Most managers come in with their staff behind them and with his stock so high he will be able to make his own demands.
“If he doesn’t know Ruud and doesn’t know his personality then he won’t have his back.
“I think when new managers come in it’s time for a fresh start and you don’t want any confusion as to what was at the club before.”
Van Nistelrooy’s final two matches as Manchester United manager are set for this week, beginning with a Europa League clash against PAOK on Thursday night, followed by a Premier League fixture against Leicester City on Sunday.
