Discussions between Newcastle United and Liverpool regarding the transfer of Alexander Isak are progressing positively, with both clubs hopeful of reaching an agreement, according to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg.
Sources close to the striker’s camp have indicated optimism about the situation, with Isak himself keen on making the move to Anfield.
However, it is understood that a club-record bid will be required to persuade Newcastle to part ways with their star forward.
The Premier League champions have already reached a verbal agreement in principle with Isak over personal terms.
The proposed contract would run until 2031, highlighting the Reds’ long-term commitment to the Swedish international.
Isak is currently training alone at his former club Real Sociedad’s training facilities as uncertainty surrounds his future at Newcastle United.
Newcastle are reportedly aware of Isak’s location as he recovers from a “minor thigh injury” that has prevented him from joining the squad’s pre-season tour in Singapore.
The 25-year-old striker has told Newcastle that he wishes to explore his options during this transfer window following an informal approach from Liverpool.
Isak has been using the Basque club’s facilities, along with his personal staff, during times when they are empty to aid his recovery.
Should Isak leave Newcastle, Real Sociedad will receive 10 percent of any transfer fee above €70million (£60.5million).
Additionally, Sociedad will gain 2 percent through FIFA’s Solidarity Programme, amounting to 0.5 percent for each season he spent at the club.
Isak originally joined Real Sociedad in 2019 from Borussia Dortmund, spending three years with the La Liga side before moving to Newcastle in the summer of 2022 for a club-record fee of £63million.
Following a surprising 1-0 defeat to a K League XI in South Korea on Wednesday, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe acknowledged that Isak’s future might be beyond his control amid intense speculation linking the striker to Liverpool.
Howe said of Isak’s future: “He is still our player. He’s contracted to us. We, to a degree, control what is next for him.
“I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. My wish is that he stays, but that’s not in my full control.
“We have not received a formal offer for Alex, from any club. My wish is that he stays and we see him playing again next year.”
