“We were not favourites at the start of the season” – MacAllister

Alexis MacAllister says win against 'Villa means something' but it's still one game at a time

Liverpool consolidated their position at the top of the Premier League table with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday night, a victory Alexis MacAllister believes is a statement from the entire team.

Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah’s goals in each half helped Liverpool go five points clear of Machester City, who lost earlier at the Amex against Brighton and Hove Albion.

After another solid performance, MacAllister thinks Liverpool’s position on the league table is a testament to their hard work, belief, and little external pressure, as they were not considered favorites at the start of the season.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, the World Cup winner said, “We’re top of the league – five points ahead, then it means something.

“But we go step by step because if you asked me before the season started I wouldn’t say that we were candidates but now it looks like so we’re going to keep working and try to keep getting better.

MacAllister’s former team Brighton did Liverpool a favor earlier in the day by coming from behind to stun the defending Champions condemning them to their fourth successive defeat – the first of its kind under Pep Guardiola.

The midfielder was full of praise and was grateful to his previous employers. ” I did know the result [Brighton’s win], we were watching the game. Happy for Brighton – as you know I have a very special feeling for the Club, I’m really grateful and at the same time they’re in a very good moment.

“They won against one of the best teams in the world at the moment, and I am happy for them. But we’re not thinking about that, we are just focusing on ourselves.”

Mohamed Salah’s second-half goal put the game to bed, killing any Aston Villa hope of a comeback. The Egyptian now boasts double figures in both goals and assists in just 17 matches this season.

MacAllister emphasized Salah’s importance to the team. “He’s so good and so important to the team, I think we all know. Not just for the team but for the Club as well, the legend he is so happy for him. And yes when you have him you know he’s going to deliver, he’s going to have the numbers so we’re happy that he is playing for us.”
