Alexander Isak’s hopes of securing a move to Liverpool may have taken a hit as Newcastle fear they have lost their top target, Benjamin Sesko, according to the Daily Mail.
The Magpies remain interested in the RB Leipzig striker, but with Manchester United also pursuing the Slovenian forward, there are growing concerns internally that Newcastle’s chances of signing him have diminished.
If that happens, it could significantly impact the decision Newcastle manager Eddie Howe says the club must make regarding Isak’s future.
The Swedish striker has ruled himself out of the club’s Far East tour due to a thigh injury, although subsequent scans revealed no damage.
Isak is keen to join Liverpool, who are currently working on a bid.
However, Newcastle have repeatedly stated they will only consider selling Isak if it is “right for the club,” which means having suitable replacements lined up.
If they miss out on Sesko, Newcastle will need to identify alternatives before allowing Isak to leave.
Transfers are reportedly underway for both Sesko and Brentford’s Yoane Wissa.
Additionally, Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz has recently been added to the shortlist, while Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins is another option, particularly if Sesko opts for Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Newcastle midfielder Joe Willock suffered an injury scare during Wednesday night’s 1-0 defeat to the K-League All Stars in South Korea.
He was stretchered off late in the game, and while more information is awaited, teammates suggested after the match that his ankle injury may not be as serious as initially feared.
