Why Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota train away from Liverpool group

The two forwards worked separately from the main group, which was under Slot's supervision

Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa were both present at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre on Thursday as head coach Arne Slot and his squad continued preparations for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Fulham at Anfield.

The two forwards worked separately from the main group, which was under Slot’s supervision as the team focused on fine-tuning their tactics for the upcoming match against Marco Silva’s side.

Jota has not featured for Liverpool since suffering an injury in a collision with Chelsea’s Tosin Adarabioyo during the 2-1 victory on October 20.

However, the Portugal international made progress in his recovery by participating in open training with his teammates on Monday, just before the squad flew to Spain for Tuesday’s Champions League fixture against Girona.

Although Jota was not part of the traveling squad for the Champions League match, staying behind on Merseyside to continue his rehabilitation, he was back on the training pitch on Thursday alongside Chiesa at the club’s Kirkby base.

Chiesa, who joined Liverpool from Juventus in late August for £10m, has only played around 80 minutes of senior football since his arrival.

The Reds have been cautious in reintegrating the Italy international into the first team, given that he had limited pre-season involvement with his former club.

Chiesa featured for the Under-21s for about an hour in December but missed Monday’s session due to illness.

He returned to training alongside Jota on Thursday while Slot oversaw the main group, most of whom will feature in Saturday’s game.

Slot is expected to provide updates on the pair’s respective conditions when he speaks to the media on Friday morning.

Their returns would be timely, with a packed schedule ahead, including a Carabao Cup quarter-final at Southampton and a trip to Tottenham next week.

The head coach will be without Ibrahima Konate, Conor Bradley, and Kostas Tsimikas for the Fulham match, while Alexis Mac Allister is suspended.

However, goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who starred in Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over Girona, is set to make his return to Premier League action for the first time since October 5.
