Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has congratulated Real Madrid forward Vinícius Jr after the Brazilian won The Best Men’s Player award.
Vinícius Jr was one of the standout winners at the ceremony, also being named in the Best XI, while Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah missed out.
The Egyptian forward has been overlooked for several major awards despite another record-breaking season at Anfield in 2024.
Salah, 32, scored 25 goals and provided 13 assists during the 2023-24 season and has already contributed 29 goal involvements (16 goals, 13 assists) in the current campaign, helping propel Liverpool to the top of the Premier League under manager Arne Slot.
However, Salah’s name was notably absent from several prestigious award lists, including The Best Men’s Player award, the Ballon d’Or (which was claimed by Manchester City’s Rodri), and the African Footballer of the Year award, which went to Ademola Lookman.
Following Vinícius Jr’s success in Doha, Alisson took to Instagram to send a message of congratulations to his international teammate.
He posted: “Congratulations @ViniJr. What a joy to see a Brazilian on top.”
Vinícius Júnior, who missed the trip to Anfield last month due to injury, was left feeling aggrieved after losing out on the Ballon d’Or to Spain international Rodri.
The fallout from the decision led to the 24-year-old, along with his teammates and Real Madrid representatives, boycotting the prestigious ceremony in Paris.
This marked the second consecutive year in which Liverpool players missed out on the Ballon d’Or.
In 2022, both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané were nominated. Salah received just two points, finishing at the bottom of the 14-player shortlist, while Mané placed sixth following his stellar performances for Liverpool and his Africa Cup of Nations triumph.
