Bruno Fernandes has acknowledged that the atmosphere at Manchester United is currently “not positive” and revealed that he considered leaving Old Trafford this summer.
The 30-year-old rejected offers from clubs across Europe and Saudi Arabia in favour of signing a lucrative new contract with United, which will keep him at the club until 2027.
Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Al-Nassr were all reportedly interested in acquiring him, but in August, the Red Devils’ captain chose to commit his future to United.
Fernandes signed his new three-year deal with the hope that, under co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the club will soon return to its former glories.
However, after 11 games into the new season, United have managed only three wins, putting pressure on manager Erik ten Hag and drawing criticism towards Ratcliffe’s regime.
Fernandes could have sidestepped the current crisis by opting to leave the club.
“I was approached [by other clubs], the club was aware that there was a possibility of me leaving, I had concrete offers,” he told ESPN.
“But the club showed that it needed me, that it was at a time of change and that they wanted to do things differently.”
Bruno Fernandes, who has yet to score for the Red Devils this season, admitted that he enjoys playing for Portugal more than for his club.
“It’s not a positive moment,” he said of United.
“We’re not winning games, and the national team space is completely different.
“I’ve felt very at ease.
“The dynamics are very good.
“I’m in my country, I speak my language, and I have better food.
“I have demonstrated a good level in the national team.
“It’s a space where I feel good and I feel like I can enjoy my football at a very high level, due to the dynamics we have and the quality I have at my side.”
