Manchester United announce exit of sporting director Dan Ashworth
The 53-year-old joined the Red Devils in July as part of sweeping structural changes initiated by Sir Jim Ratcliffe
Manchester United have announced the departure of sporting director Dan Ashworth, just five months after his arrival at the club.
The 53-year-old joined the Red Devils in July as part of sweeping structural changes initiated by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
United secured Ashworth’s services from Newcastle United after protracted negotiations, during which he was placed on gardening leave by the Magpies.
Despite the high expectations surrounding his appointment, Ashworth’s tenure at Old Trafford has come to an abrupt end.
The club released a brief statement confirming his departure: “Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as Sporting Director of Manchester United by mutual agreement.
“We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future.”
According to The Athletic, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s transition to taking control at Old Trafford has been less smooth than anticipated.
A statement released in July confirmed his impending arrival, stating: “ Newcastle United and Manchester United have reached an agreement for the immediate release of Dan Ashworth from his contractual obligations at Newcastle United.
“The terms of this agreement remain confidential between the clubs.
“Newcastle United thanks Dan for his services and wishes him well for the future.”
Since then, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has played a pivotal role in Manchester United’s transfer activities.
The club spent around £200m in the summer to bring in five new signings – Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, Leny Yoro, and Noussair Mazraoui.
Reports suggest that Ratcliffe was called into a meeting with fellow summer arrival Omar Berrada, where his departure from his role was mutually agreed upon.
It is believed that Ratcliffe, as the owner, played a key part in this decision.
Away from Old Trafford, Paul Ashworth has held roles at Brighton, West Brom, and the FA.
His final match with United was the 3-2 home defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
This loss leaves the Red Devils in 13th place in the Premier League, having suffered their sixth defeat of the season.
United are now on a two-match losing streak in the league under new boss Ruben Amorim.
United will be back in action midweek, taking on Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League, followed by a crucial clash with Manchester City.
