Napoli have reportedly scaled back their talks with Liverpool regarding a potential transfer for Darwin Nunez as they focus on signing Udinese’s Lorenzo Lucca.
The Serie A champions had emerged as frontrunners to sign Nunez this summer.
Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport claimed Napoli offered a deal worth an initial €55million (£47.5m), potentially rising to €60million (£51.8m) with add-ons.
However, later on Friday, Sky Sports Italy contradicted those reports, stating that Napoli have “now reduced their contact with Liverpool over Nunez” as they pursue Lucca instead.
Napoli are reportedly close to finalising the signing of the 24-year-old striker in a deal worth around €34million (£29.3m), significantly less than what Liverpool are asking for Nunez.
This move may also be a strategic attempt to strengthen Napoli’s negotiating position by showing Liverpool they have a more affordable alternative.
With Victor Osimhen expected to leave in a deal worth €75million (£64.8m), Napoli’s management, including Richard Hughes and co., will likely hold firm, knowing they will soon have funds to reinvest.
Napoli’s pre-season begins on July 17, and the club will be eager to have a new striker ready for manager Antonio Conte on day one.
Although Nunez has reportedly given the green light to progress with the deal, Napoli must meet Liverpool’s demands to secure his transfer or, as Sky Sports Italy suggests, opt for an alternative.
The Uruguayan forward has already reported back for Liverpool’s pre-season, but manager Arne Slot’s frustration with Nunez last season – evidenced by just one start in the final 19 games – could have influenced the club’s decision to consider other options.
