Newcastle United are planning to revive their interest in Hugo Ekitike as manager Eddie Howe looks to find competition for Alexander Isak in attack.
According to The Telegraph, the Magpies have made the French striker’s agent aware of their intent to bring him to St James’ Park from Eintracht Frankfurt, having twice failed to secure his signing in 2022.
Ekitike enjoyed an impressive season, scoring 22 goals and providing 12 assists.
However, with a release clause set at €100million (£86million), Eintracht Frankfurt are under no immediate financial pressure to sell.
Earlier this summer, Ekitike was linked with Chelsea, and he has also been monitored by Liverpool and Manchester United.
On Friday, Newcastle confirmed the £55million signing of Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest, giving Howe two options for either flank ahead of the new season.
However, Isak remains the club’s sole recognised centre-forward following Callum Wilson’s departure.
Wilson left Newcastle last month and is currently weighing up several offers before deciding his next destination.
The 33-year-old is undertaking an individual training camp as he aims to extend his playing career for a few more years.
In the meantime, Wilson has been working as a pundit for DAZN during the Club World Cup and said, “I don’t want to leave it too long before making a decision.
“I’ve continued to keep myself fit during the off season and it’s now confirmed that I will be joining a new club at some point.
“I want to go in there hitting the ground running so I’m going into a fitness camp abroad and then I’ll get up my sharpness.
“Then I’ll make a decision and when I’m back in the UK I’ll be joining the new team.”
“I feel strong and I feel in a good place mentally,” he added.
“I’m content in terms of the situation now. I know I’ve left Newcastle, so that’s kind of one less decision I need to make going forward.”
