Nottingham Forest file complaint over Tottenham’s pursuit of Morgan Gibbs-White

Spurs had scheduled a medical for the England midfielder after deciding to trigger his £60m release clause

Nottingham Forest have lodged a formal complaint with the Premier League and are considering legal action, alleging that Tottenham Hotspur’s approach for their captain Morgan Gibbs-White may have been illegal, according to Sky Sports News.

Spurs had scheduled a medical for the England midfielder after deciding to trigger his £60million release clause.

However, the transfer now appears to be in jeopardy following Forest’s letter of complaint to both Tottenham and the league regarding what they claim was an unlawful attempt to tap up their player.

The potential arrival of Gibbs-White would come after Tottenham’s recent £55million signing of Mohammed Kudus from West Ham and the acquisition of young Japanese defender Kota Takai.

Spurs are clearly aiming to strengthen their squad for a strong campaign in both the Premier League and Champions League under new head coach Thomas Frank.

Forest are under no immediate financial pressure to sell Gibbs-White, having already approved the £55million sale of Anthony Elanga to Newcastle earlier this week.

Manchester City had also expressed interest but have cooled their pursuit in recent weeks.

Gibbs-White, who still has two years left on his contract, joined Forest from Wolves in August 2022 for an initial fee of £25million plus £17million in add-ons.

Wolves are entitled to 10% of any profit made from his future sale.

Last season, Gibbs-White played a crucial role as Forest returned to European competition for the first time since the 1995-96 season, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists in 34 league appearances.

Despite their strong campaign, Forest missed out on Champions League qualification late in the season and will instead compete in the Conference League.

Additionally, Forest have already received £16.8million from the transfers of Ramon Sosa and Andrew Omobamidele to Palmeiras and Strasbourg respectively.

The club also recently signed Brazilian forward Igor Jesus from Botafogo for £10million.
