Real Sociedad order Martin Zubimendi to trigger his £51m release clause

Real Sociedad have turned up the heat on Liverpool target Martin Zubimendi, insisting that he must personally trigger his £51 million release clause if he wishes to leave his boyhood club, according to The Times.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who has been with the Basque club since he was 12, would need to pay the €60 million release clause himself at the La Liga offices in Madrid to facilitate a transfer.

This move by Sociedad has only intensified the pressure on Zubimendi.

The club are playing hardball with the Spain international, potentially complicating any plans he might have had to negotiate with Liverpool.

Martin Zubimendi has emerged as a prime candidate for the No. 6 role under new Liverpool head coach Arne Slot, with the Anfield club believing that he was set to join them.

When asked about the possibility of new signings following friendlies against Sevilla and Las Palmas on Sunday, Slot said: “I’m positive. I’m confident.

“I think that we should make some signings based on how long the season will go.

“I think they’re working behind the scenes.

“I’m fully convinced and trust in the club that they will do the right thing for us and get the best possible squad in order to compete in every competition that we are in.

“I have to trust and we’ll see what happens.”

Meanwhile, Red Bull Salzburg remain interested in Bobby Clark, but their latest offer of £8 million falls short of Liverpool’s asking price.

The Reds are seeking at least £10 million for Clark, a player they acquired from Newcastle United for £1.5 million three years ago.

Ben Doak is a loan target for Leicester City and Southampton, though a permanent transfer is also a possibility.

Additionally, there are reports that Liverpool might consider loaning out Stefan Bajcetic, who has struggled to secure regular minutes during pre-season.

Several other players, including Tyler Morton, Sepp van den Berg, Owen Beck, Kaide Gordon, and Nat Phillips, are also heavily linked with potential moves – both permanent and temporary – before the transfer deadline.
