Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim eyes new goalkeeper to challenge Andre Onana

Onana, who has conceded 26 goals in 19 Premier League appearances this season, has shown signs of improvement but remains inconsistent

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly eager to bring in a new goalkeeper to provide competition for Andre Onana as the team looks to improve their defensive stability.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Amorim wants a reliable alternative who can push Onana for the No.1 spot at Old Trafford.

Onana, who has conceded 26 goals in 19 Premier League appearances this season, has shown signs of improvement but remains inconsistent.

The Cameroonian faced heavy criticism after his costly errors in United’s 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest, where he allowed a tame Morgan Gibbs-White shot and a soft Chris Wood header to find the net.

Although United currently have Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir in their squad, Amorim reportedly does not view him as an ideal backup option.

Bayindir’s mistakes in United’s 4-3 League Cup quarter-final loss to Tottenham have further diminished his chances of being considered a reliable alternative.

Since joining the club in 2023, Bayindir has made just eight appearances across all competitions and is yet to feature in the Premier League.

Amorim, who has had a challenging start to life at United, has acknowledged that the team faces the possibility of being dragged into a relegation battle if results don’t improve.

Beyond a new goalkeeper, the former Sporting CP manager is also looking to bolster his midfield and attacking options over the next two transfer windows.

However, any new signings will require player sales to comply with current profit and sustainability rules.

United’s first game of the New Year sees them travel to Anfield for a high-stakes Premier League clash against Liverpool on Sunday, with Onana expected to retain his starting spot between the posts.
