Why eight Liverpool World Cup players will miss start of US pre-season tour

With the squad due back for pre-season around July 13, none of the players are expected to be available for the opening stages of the US tour.

All eight of Liverpool’s World Cup representatives will miss the start of the club’s pre-season tour of the United States after helping their countries reach the knockout stages.

Liverpool had seven players involved in the tournament before adding an eighth following the signing of Victor Munoz. They represent six nations, all of whom have advanced to the round of 32.

With the squad due back for pre-season around July 13, none of the players are expected to be available for the opening stages of the US tour, which begins against Sunderland in Nashville on July 25.

Liverpool typically grant players at least three weeks off following an international tournament, meaning even those eliminated in the round of 32 are likely to miss the start of the tour.

The last-16 ties conclude on July 7, and players reaching that stage could also miss the second tour match. Those who progress even further may not return until shortly before the new Premier League season begins.

Liverpool host Monaco and Como at Anfield on August 9 and 16 respectively before opening their Premier League campaign away to Newcastle on August 23.

As a result, Andoni Iraola may have his full squad available for less than a fortnight before his first competitive match as Liverpool head coach.
