Manchester United lining up January move for Sporting star Geovany Quenda

Ruben Amorim, who is set to leave Sporting for Old Trafford next week, is rumoured to be targeting several of the club's top players

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing Sporting starlet Geovany Quenda after learning they won’t be able to sign his teammate Viktor Gyokeres until next summer.

Ruben Amorim, who is set to leave Sporting for Old Trafford next week, is rumoured to be targeting several of the club’s top players.

Gyokeres, who shone with a hat-trick in Sporting’s 4-1 victory over Manchester City, was initially tipped to follow Amorim to Manchester.

However, Amorim has made it clear that he will not be able to raid the Portuguese club for players this January.

Gyokeres, who has an £83million release clause, is expected to remain at Sporting until the summer, prompting United to focus on 17-year-old winger Quenda.

The youngster, who started against Manchester City, impressed with an assist in an 85-minute performance, solidifying his reputation as one of Portugal’s brightest prospects.

Quenda has started eight of Sporting’s 10 league games under Amorim, showcasing remarkable maturity for his age.

His first goal of the season last month made history, as he became the club’s youngest-ever league scorer, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo.

Man United are believed to have been monitoring Quenda since his debut in August.

The winger, who joined Sporting at age 12, has already gained Amorim’s trust, even sitting on the bench last season at just 16.

The 39-year-old coach is clearly a fan of Quenda’s potential and may be keen to bring him to United if the opportunity arises.

Although Man United have four primary wingers in their squad, only Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo have impressed this season, with Marcus Rashford struggling and Antony seeing limited playing time.

Geovany Quenda, who can also play as a wing-back, would suit Amorim’s tactical setup, with the coach likely to adopt his preferred 3-4-3 formation at United once he arrives on November 11.

Reports indicate Quenda has a release clause of £84million, and Sporting are unlikely to accept anything less.

As with Gyokeres, United may have to wait until next summer to secure the talented winger’s services.
