Federico Chiesa scored his first goal in a Liverpool shirt as he played for an hour for the Under-21s on Wednesday night – in a game that saw the Reds lose 3-4 against FC Nordsjaelland at the AXA training center.
The Danes took the lead early on as Mads Hansen broke the offside trap before squaring for Levy Nene to score a simple tap-in into an unguarded net after just two minutes, as reported by Theo Squires for Liverpool Echo.
Federico Chiesa managed to equalize 10 minutes later as he ran onto captain Tom Hill’s through-ball before evading a defender in the box and drilling across the goal into the bottom corner.
Hill and Dominic Corness both went close for the young Reds as the former saw a header tipped over from a corner, while goalkeeper William Lykke kept out a low volley from the latter.
Nordsjaelland would retake the lead through a corner of their own as Erik Marxen headed home at the far post before Hansen extended their advantage with a smart left-footed finish.
Jayden Danns, who was making his first start of the season after a back injury, was replaced by Ranel Young at half-time, while Kyle Kelly came on for Chiesa on the hour-mark. And he almost got his name on the scoresheet as he volleyed over from Trent Kone-Doherty’s cross.
Liverpool would soon halve the deficit though as Corness took advantage of a mistake from goalkeeper Lykke to get his name on the scoresheet.
Kone-Doherty equalized late on with a smart finish as he ran onto Corness’ through-ball, beat a defender, and slotted home under Lykke.
But the young Reds suffered even later heartache as substitute Villum Berthelsen pounced when Liverpool failed to clear inside their box, slotting home with a low finish.
Having come through 60 minutes unscathed following his return to full-team training, Federico Chiesa will hope to give Arne Slot something to think about ahead of a potential first-team return for the £10m summer signing against Everton in Saturday’s Merseyside derby.
