‘I love the club’ – Virgil van Dijk speaks out amid Liverpool contract uncertainty

The 33-year-old will soon be in a position to negotiate a free transfer next summer

Virgil van Dijk has echoed what many Liverpool supporters have been thinking.

The Reds’ captain has been in superb form throughout an incredible first half of the season under Arne Slot.

Liverpool head into tonight’s clash with Leicester City at Anfield (8pm kick-off), sitting atop the Premier League, leading their Champions League group, and into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup – a trophy they claimed in the final season of Jurgen Klopp’s reign.

Slot has overseen 21 wins from 25 matches across all competitions since succeeding the legendary German, and his seamless transition to life on Merseyside has sparked growing belief that his debut campaign could end with silverware.

A key figure in this success has been the towering Van Dijk, who continues to prove why many regard him as the world’s best centre-back.

But despite his remarkable status, the 33-year-old will soon be in a position to negotiate a free transfer next summer.

That’s because, in less than a week, Van Dijk, along with vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold and leading scorer Mohamed Salah, will enter the final six months of their contracts with Liverpool.

It’s understood that the club has now offered fresh terms to this influential trio, but as the end of 2024 draws near, negotiations between their representatives and sporting director Richard Hughes are still ongoing.

Ahead of the Leicester fixture, Van Dijk described his relationship with Liverpool as a “love affair” and shared his belief that he can continue playing at the highest level for years to come.

Speaking in an interview with Amazon Prime, the Netherlands captain said: “I love the club, the club loves me.

“I love the fans, the fans love me and it is a very good foundation to be successful.

“In my opinion I can play for another three, four years at least at the highest level. We will see what the future brings.”
