Liverpool add new set-piece specialist in backroom staff restructure

The Reds have appointed Lewis Mahoney as their new first-team set-piece analyst

Liverpool have further strengthened their backroom staff with another set-piece specialist, following Aaron Briggs’ official promotion to first-team set-piece coach.

Briggs, who had effectively been fulfilling this role throughout last season, has now formally taken on the title of first-team set-piece coach.

His new responsibilities come alongside the arrival of Brazilian coach Luiz Fernando Iubel, who began work on Monday as Liverpool’s new individual development lead coach after making the move from Atlético Mineiro.

The Reds have also appointed Lewis Mahoney as their new first-team set-piece analyst. The 36-year-old joins from Southampton, where he held the same role for nearly two years.

Before his time with the Saints, Mahoney worked as a performance analyst for both Swansea City and Bristol Rovers.

Mahoney’s primary role will be to support Briggs in implementing fresh strategies for both attacking and defending set-pieces.

Those efforts were evident during Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Arsenal on Sunday, a match decided by Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning free-kick from over 30 yards.

While Szoboszlai’s individual brilliance stole the headlines, Liverpool also successfully nullified Arsenal’s threat from corners.

The arrivals of Iubel and Mahoney are part of a wider backroom reshuffle at Anfield this summer.

Assistant coach John Heitinga departed to take over as head coach at Ajax, with compatriot Giovanni van Bronckhorst stepping in as his replacement.

Goalkeeper coaches Fabian Otte and Claudio Taffarel also left the club, prompting the return of Xavi Valero as head of first-team goalkeeper coaching and the appointment of Colin Stewart as goalkeeper development and pathway lead.

Additionally, Liverpool’s medical department underwent a restructuring under director of medicine and performance Jonathan Power.

Lee Nobes’ role shifted from head physio to head of rehab physiotherapy, Conall Murtagh was promoted to head of physical performance, and Chris Morgan became head of performance physical therapy.
