Paul Scholes reveals where Man United can finish under Ruben Amorim

The Red Devils are currently 14th in the Premier League table

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has weighed in on the potential of Ruben Amorim, suggesting what the highly-rated coach could realistically achieve if he were to take over as manager.

Sporting Lisbon confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that they have been approached by the Premier League giants regarding a managerial change.

United are looking to replace the sacked Erik ten Hag with the promising 39-year-old coach.

In their statement, Sporting Lisbon noted that Manchester United had “expressed an interest” in triggering Amorim’s release clause.

According to Daily Mail, Amorim’s notice period is “a number of weeks rather than days,” indicating that a deal may take some time to finalise.

If Manchester United can secure Amorim before their upcoming match against Chelsea on Sunday, he would inherit a team currently sitting 14th in the Premier League table.

The Red Devils are seven points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa and the automatic Champions League qualification spots.

With only nine matches played in the season, Amorim would have an opportunity to help the team close that gap.

However, Scholes believes that a top-four finish may be unrealistic for Amorim to achieve, given the club’s current struggles.

“At the very best, Manchester United could finish 4th in the league,’ said Paul Scholes, speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet.

“It’s very hard to see that happening at this point, you’d probably say 6th [is more realistic].”

In addition to their pursuit of success in the Premier League, Manchester United could secure Champions League qualification by winning the Europa League.

However, if an agreement isn’t reached for the early termination of Ruben Amorim’s contract at Sporting, he will not be in the dugout when Man United face Chelsea on Sunday.

There is a possibility that Amorim, who has won two league titles in Portugal, may not take charge until United’s match against Ipswich Town on November 24.

Following the Chelsea encounter in the Premier League, Manchester United will play Leicester City again on November 10.

After that match, there will be a two-week international break before they travel to Portman Road for a televised match on Sunday.
