Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has made his stance clear on Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak amid growing transfer speculation linking the forward to Anfield.
Hugo Ekitike and Isak were Liverpool’s top attacking targets this summer.
After Newcastle rejected their approach for Isak, Liverpool shifted their focus to Ekitike, securing a swift deal with Eintracht Frankfurt, reportedly worth an initial £69million.
Despite completing that signing, rumours around Isak persisted. The striker missed Newcastle’s friendly defeat to Celtic as well as the club’s pre-season tour of Asia.
It was later revealed that Isak wants to leave St James’ Park, and Newcastle manager Eddie Howe confirmed there is no chance Isak will rejoin the squad later this month.
Having already invested at least £169.5million on new signings Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, and Florian Wirtz, Liverpool seemed unlikely to spend another large sum on Isak.
However, the recent sale of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich has made a high-value transfer more feasible.
The Colombian international attracted two bids from Bayern, with the second offer of £60.1million (€70million) accepted.
Diaz was granted permission to leave Liverpool’s training camp to undergo a medical in Munich.
An official approach to Newcastle for Isak is now expected in the coming days.
Fowler echoed the sentiments of many Liverpool fans by giving a glowing endorsement of the 25-year-old striker.
“As a Liverpool fan, we would all love to see him, wouldn’t we?” Robbie Fowler told The RedMen TV.
“When you look at the Premier League and the goals he scored last year, the types of goals and his performances, he was phenomenal. “Hopefully, he can carry that on, and hopefully it will be at Liverpool.
“If you were to pick one player from the Premier League last year who you would have wanted to sign for Liverpool, he would probably be on 90 per cent of people’s lips.
“We probably needed that pivotal striker on the pitch last season. He could be the difference if he were to come.”
